When to trim, why to trim and how to trim:

In our Bangladesh, 30-40% of farms do not trim the beaks of chickens properly. Even when it is done, the management after trimming is not handled correctly.

The natural behavior of chickens is to establish dominance within the group. As a result, they fight among themselves. Through these fights, the dominant chicken asserts its position, and the others accept their subordination. The weaker chickens are often pecked by the stronger ones.

Moreover, when a chicken’s beak grows long, it becomes fearful of other chickens’ beaks. It fears that if it doesn’t defend itself first, it might be attacked. Therefore, it tries to peck first, leading to cannibalism.

During such pecking incidents, the injured chicken bleeds. When other chickens see the blood, they become attracted to it and continue to peck at the injured one, sometimes tearing it apart.

This situation is known as a chicken riot.

Sometimes, in a flock of a thousand layers, 1-2 chickens may be killed in a day, and 30-90 eggs may be eaten. This could turn the farm into a loss-making project. Therefore, beak trimming is a very important aspect of farm management.

Other Reasons for Pecking and Fighting:

    1. Calcium deficiency in the feed.
    2. Ammonia gas presence in the house.
    3. Chickens being overcrowded.
    4. Too little or too much salt in the feed.
    5. Sunlight entering the house.

    Beak Trimming:

Beak trimming refers to cutting certain sharp parts of a chicken’s beak.

Beak Trimming for Chicks: In chicks, the process of trimming the beak is known as “beak trimming” (beaktrimming).

Why Do We Trim the Beak?

    1. To prevent pecking and fighting during the day. We cannot control the intensity of light during the day, which leads to increased pecking. Thus, trimming is essential to prevent cannibalism (feather and toe picking).
    2. To reduce feed wastage.
    3. To improve Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR).
    4. To bring uniformity in the flock. This helps improve overall uniformity among chickens.
    5. Chickens tend to eat larger grains (like corn), but fine components like protein and other vitamins and minerals, which aid growth, are present in smaller feed particles. Beak trimming helps them access these nutrients.
    6. To prevent egg-eating.
    7. To avoid death due to cannibalism.

When Should Beak Trimming Be Done?

The timing of beak trimming depends on several factors:

    1. Breeder/Commercial Layer:
Breeder farms have better lighting systems and management practices, so chickens remain healthy, and beak trimming can be done at any time. However, in commercial farms, this luxury isn’t available, so the trimming process needs to be more carefully timed.
    2. Chick Growth and Vaccination Schedule:
Beak trimming should be avoided between 7-12 weeks of age since chickens grow rapidly during this period, gaining about 100 grams per week. If trimmed during this time, weight gain might be affected. Additionally, many vaccinations are given before 7 weeks, and trimming during this time can pose health risks.
    3. Traditional Method/Correct Method:
The traditional method involves trimming the beak first, followed by filing. The correct method is to trim first and then file.
    4. Chicken Health/Stress:
Beak trimming is difficult to do if the chickens are unwell. Additionally, if the temperature is above 35°C, trimming should be avoided.
    5. Breed:
Different breeds may require beak trimming at different times. For example, for Kazi Highline, trimming once between 7-10 days is sufficient, while in CP chicks, trimming is done at 9-12 weeks.
    6. Duration on the Floor:
The ideal age for trimming chicks is between 6-10 days. If not trimmed by this time, they should be filed.

For growing chickens, beak trimming is best done at 9-12 weeks to minimize stress. However, in many countries, beak trimming is done at 11-14 weeks, and in hatcheries, it is often done with lasers within the first 10-30 days. Beak trimming is banned in some countries.

Reasons to Avoid Beak Trimming Between 12-14 Weeks:
At this age, beak trimming causes more stress, and production might be delayed.

    Beak Trimming Method:

If done correctly, trimming reduces the likelihood of future beak growth. If the trimming is followed by proper cauterization, bleeding will stop, and the chances of further growth will be reduced.

Trimming at a young age reduces the strain on the chickens. Incorrect trimming can make it difficult for chickens to eat.

    Trimming Procedure:

    1. Trim 0.2 cm from the front of the upper beak and 0.2-0.3 cm from the lower beak.
    2. Both upper and lower beaks should be trimmed equally or the lower beak slightly longer.
    3. The white part at the front of the beak should be cut off. Hold the beak in the machine for 2 seconds to trim.
    4. For growing chickens, trim ½ to ⅔ of the upper beak and ¼ to ⅓ of the lower beak.
    5. In breeders, male chicks should have their beaks trimmed to be equal.
    6. The upper and lower beaks should be trimmed separately.
    7. When using electric beak trimming machines, both cutting and cauterizing happen simultaneously.

    Beak Trimming Machine:

    1. Block Chick Trimming Machine
    2. High-Speed Trimming Machine
    image 8 image 8

    When Not to Trim Beaks:

    1. When the chickens are stressed.
    2. 2 days before or after vaccination.
    3. During significant weather changes.
    4. When disease outbreaks occur.
    5. When the chickens start laying eggs.
    6. 2 days before or after the administration of harmful medications.

    Precautions While Trimming Beaks:

    1. Provide Vitamin K to the chickens 2 days before trimming.
    2. Disinfect the trimming machine thoroughly.
    3. Check the sharpness of the blades.
    4. Ensure the blade temperature is checked before trimming.
    5. Ensure no harm comes to the chicken’s eyes.
    6. Trim during cooler times of the day.
    7. Trim only by experienced professionals, as expertise is rare in the country.
    8. Do not feed chickens 3 hours before trimming.
    9. Do not use the same blade for trimming more than 20,000 chickens, and check the blade temperature (800-850°C, measured with a pyrometer).
    10. After trimming, it is advisable to file the beak using cold water.

    Post Beak Trimming Care:

    1. If there are nipple drinkers, provide cup or trough drinkers as well.
    2. Increase light exposure for 2-4 hours for 3-5 days.
    3. Increase feed to reduce pain.
    4. Increase the depth of water containers.
    5. Add more protein to the feed.
    6. Provide paracetamol in the water.
    7. Offer Vitamin A, D3, E, or multivitamins.
    8. If necessary, administer antibiotics.
    9. Immune-stimulating agents can be used.
    10. After 3 days, administer probiotics for 5-10 days.
    11. Add Vitamin C, E, and amino acids.

Those who trim beaks should be careful not to trim too much or too little. If trimmed too little, the beak will grow back, leading to further pecking and fighting. If trimmed too much, chickens will eat less for about a month, causing weight loss and delayed production due to stress. This can lead to various diseases such as Pox, Marek’s, Ranikhet, Mycoplasma, and Enteritis.

After beak trimming, stress hormones (ACTH) are released, reducing the chickens’ appetite and water intake. They may avoid food and water for 2-4 days.

  • Ramadan’s First Sunset: Balancing Life, Family, and the Joy of Iftar

    image 1 image 1

The first day of Ramadan always feels special, but this year, it was even more meaningful. With a busy life, work, and family responsibilities, I knew the day would be challenging, but I was ready to embrace it with an open heart.

The morning began early with Suhoor, ensuring I had enough energy for the long fast ahead. As the day progressed, balancing work, fasting, and taking care of my little son kept me occupied. He doesn’t fully understand Ramadan yet, but his innocent curiosity and energy made the day feel lighter.

    iftar

Despite the exhaustion, the real joy came in the evening when I started preparing iftar for my family. Cooking has always been my passion, but this time, it felt more fulfilling.

The kitchen was bustling with the aroma of delicious dishes, and though I was tired, the thought of sharing a meal with my loved ones gave me the strength to keep going. My little one played around, occasionally watching me cook, his laughter making the moment even more precious.

As Maghrib approached, the table was set, and we gathered as a family. The first sip of water, the sweetness of dates, and the first bite of my homemade dishes felt like a well-earned reward. The fatigue of the day melted away, replaced by a deep sense of gratitude and warmth.

Ramadan isn’t just about fasting; it’s about patience, love, and togetherness. Despite the busyness of life, sharing this moment with my family—especially my little son—made it all worthwhile. I look forward to more such evenings, cherishing the blessings of this holy month.

    Ramadan Mubarak! 🌙✨

  • Money Management

    money managment

Managing your money doesn’t have to be complicated. By following these five straightforward steps, you can take control of your finances and build a more secure future.

    1. Track Every Dollar

The foundation of good money management is knowing where your money goes. For one month, record every expense—from your morning coffee to your utility bills. You can use:

    • A simple notebook
    • A spreadsheet
    • Money tracking apps like Mint or YNAB

After 30 days, categorize your spending (housing, food, entertainment, etc.) and prepare to be surprised by what you discover. Most people find patterns they never noticed before.

    image 4 image 4

    2. Create a Simple Budget

Now that you know where your money is going, it’s time to direct it with purpose. The 50/30/20 rule is an excellent place to start:

    • 50% for needs (housing, groceries, utilities, transportation)
    • 30% for wants (dining out, entertainment, hobbies)
    • 20% for savings and debt repayment

Adjust these percentages based on your income and goals, but keep it simple enough that you’ll actually follow it.

    3. Build an Emergency Fund

Life is unpredictable. Car repairs, medical bills, or job loss can derail your finances if you’re not prepared. Aim to save:

    • First goal: $1,000 for immediate emergencies
    • Long-term goal: 3-6 months of essential expenses
    money 190506 money 190506

    4. Tackle Debt Strategically

Debt is one of the biggest obstacles to financial freedom. Choose one of these proven strategies:

    • Avalanche Method: Pay minimum payments on all debts, then put extra money toward the highest-interest debt first.
    • Snowball Method: Pay off your smallest debt first, then roll that payment into the next smallest debt.

The avalanche method saves you the most money, but the snowball method provides quick wins that keep you motivated.

    5. Automate Your Financial Life

Make good financial habits effortless by setting up automation:

    • Direct deposit a portion of your paycheck into savings
    • Set up automatic bill payments
    • Schedule regular transfers to investment accounts

Automation removes the temptation to spend money that should be saved and ensures you never miss payments.

Remember that money management is a marathon, not a sprint. Small, consistent steps in the right direction will transform your financial future over time.

  • Bake It Till You Make It

Bake It Till You Make It

I am very interested in cooking and baking. When my mother cooked, she would ask me to cut the chilies, tomatoes and onions into small pieces and add them to the dal. Then I thought I had cooked the dal. I was in class 6 then. I really love cooking. Cooking and baking are very popular in the world.

Leading conglomerates such as Olympic Industries, Pran Foods, Partex Group, Haque Food Industries, Nabisco Bread and Biscuits, Bangas Limited, and Akij Group have established a strong foothold in the market. These companies leverage automation to produce high-quality products at competitive prices, enabling them to capture over 60% of the market share. Their extensive distribution networks and diverse product lines cater to a wide range of consumer preferences.

In Bangladesh, the bakery industry is experiencing significant growth, with local bakeries, including street and “live” bakeries, playing a pivotal role alongside major automated companies. These local establishments are carving out a niche by offering fresh, artisanal products that cater to the evolving tastes of consumers.

    Emergence of Live Bakeries

A notable trend in urban areas, particularly in Dhaka, is the rise of “live bakeries.” These establishments prepare and bake products on-site, allowing customers to witness the baking process firsthand. This transparency not only assures quality and freshness but also enhances customer engagement. Live bakeries offer a range of products, from soft butter buns to golden croissants, providing a unique culinary experience that resonates with the community’s craving for quality and freshness. They also make burger’s, hotdog, pizza’s etc.

    live bakery

    Challenges and Consumer Perception

Despite their appeal, live bakeries face challenges. Some consumers question the authenticity of the “live” aspect, noting that certain products taste similar to those from traditional bakeries and may not always be freshly baked on-site. Md Arif Hussain, a resident of Narinda, expressed skepticism, stating that while he frequently purchased from live bakeries, the products often resembled ordinary bread. He questioned the “live baking” claim, as sellers admitted they couldn’t preserve live-baked bread for extended periods.

    Market Dynamics

The bakery market in Bangladesh is expanding, with local bakeries finding innovative ways to thrive amidst intense competition. By blending traditional flavors with modern baking trends, these establishments aim to attract a diverse customer base. The market size of bakery items in Bangladesh was estimated at BDT 7,000 crore in 2021, with local manufacturers meeting approximately 97-98% of domestic demand. Automated biscuit factories account for about 60% of this market, while non-branded manufacturers contribute around 36%, and imports make up the remaining 4%.

    Urbanization and Changing Consumer Preferences

Rapid urbanization has significantly increased the popularity of bakery products, especially among the working class and students. These consumers seek quick, convenient, and healthier snack options, making bakery goods a natural choice. The versatility of bakery products ensures there’s something for everyone, further boosting their appeal.
